We get a lot of questions as to where Greenhouse One is. The Main greenhouse–where you pay for your items– is technically Greenhouse Two. Every other greenhouse has a big number painted on them. So, where is Greenhouse One?

Greenhouse One is an astonishing underground treasure that houses memories only a select few can reminisce about. Nestled on the opposite side of Benny’s family home, Greenhouse One now lays tucked away, unused for years.

In 1982, Benny began his small business while still working full-time at the lumberyard. What started as a skill he had learned at his family’s greenhouse in Rhode Island blossomed into a full-blown business in just a short time. After a very prominent greenhouse in West Laramie shut down, and with the lumberyard under new management, Benny saw an opportunity to start his own business.“It all begins with an idea. Maybe you want to launch a business. Maybe you want to turn a hobby into something more.

With his wife, two very young children, and a single part-time employee working afternoons, he began planting bulbs. Planting in early August, he would raise tulips, hyacinths, daffodils, and more, which were eventually sold in the spring to wholesalers and flower shops.

After his initial plan proved successful and demand grew, Benny built another greenhouse on his property. However, just a year later, the growing business required more resources. Seeing the potential in the junkyard next to his home, he moved that second greenhouse he built to the little plot of land. Today, we know that building as Greenhouse Three.“It all begins with an idea. Maybe you want to launch a business. Maybe you want to turn a hobby into something more.

Greenhouse One holds far more meaning than it seems at first glance. Greenhouse One was not just a building filled with plants, it was a place where a man who had moved from Rhode Island to Wyoming could feel more at home. It was a greenhouse that Benny’s kids have explored and played in. In a way, it turned into a bulb itself that Benny’s family cherished and nurtured until it blossomed into a business and soon into a whole plot of land filled with greenhouses that now hold plants for you and me.

Though unused, Greenhouse One is not unloved. All of us who work at Windmill Hill deeply appreciate the history and growth that Greenhouse One represents. Tucked away where only employees can visit, we still see life in this old weathered building,  because that is where this all started. A single greenhouse, run by a small family and a single employee turned into this business we all know and love today.
